Yokohama Dance Collection R was launched in 1996 as Yokohama Dance Collection and revamped in 2005 as the largest contemporary dance market in Asia. The main site for this festival is Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse number 1.

Competing, Watching, Gathering, Learning: the four aspects of Yokohama Dance Collection R include the competition itself, performance by previous prizewinners, the showcase and symposium, a rich array of possibilities for enjoying dance from many different perspective. As of December, 2006, 46 sets of prizewinners had had the experience of giving 402 performances overseas. The festival had become one of Yokohama’s most significant programs for transmitting information and culture to the wider world.
