Yokohama Solo x Duo <Compétition> +


Held to uncover, support, and train promising young choreographers from around the world, the Yokohama Solo x Duo <Compétition> + received 133 entries from eight countries this year. The fifteen finalists, selected by screening the videos they submitted, are competing for prizes that include study in France as they daringly explore the expressive potential of the human body. All eyes are on these young choreographers as they spread their wings and soar into brilliant futures. Schedule

"To lost Everything"

I'm working as a dancer in and performing actively under the name 'One Dance Project Group'. I received a prize of the Very Best of Seoul Dance Collection in SPAF (Seoul Performing Art Festival) 2008. As a choreographer, I've been selected for support as Arko Young Frontier by Art Council Korea, from 2009 to 2010. Recently I've been showing works about questions of movement and the essence of sound with Zent Jimmy, who is a sound designer in France.

MATSUZAKI Eri

Studied ballet with MATSUZAKI Sumiko, modern dance with SHOJI Hiroshi, and contemporary dance with NOHMI Kenshi. In 1995, joined the faculty of the dance department at the National Taiwan University of Arts. In 1997, participated as a scholarship student in the Vienna International Dance Festival. In 2001, performed in "Black Bird" by NAKAMURA Megumi and Jiri Kylian. Launched and, since 2004, has been presenting new work in Japan and overseas.

SEKI Noriko
"CRIME⇔AFFAIR"

Born in Germany and raised in Takarazuka, has studied classical ballet since early childhood and has taken part in <H. Art Chaos> and other performances. Her focus recently has been on solo work, coupled with collaborations with other genres, including art, music, and fight choreography. Has studied the doctoral coursework at the Graduate School of Humanities and Science and is now a lecturer at Kobe University. Awards received include 'the Japan Dance Critics' Award' (2001 and 2004) and 'the Hyogo Prefecture Art Encouragement Prize' (2008).


YAMAZAKI Maiko / WATANABE Kumiko <Pagi>
"Because, it'll returns to 0 someday"

They met at university and began their creative work; after graduation, performed in , a dance unit formed by three women, and participated in We're Gonna Go Dancing!! Vol. 8. Began their work as the duo Pagi in 2008, presenting "Bob and Waltz" at Art Complex of Tokyo; also presented "painful", a work for four men and women, and, in 2009, "Waltz". Their constant efforts to forge themselves are directed at 'wonderful physicality' their shared language.

Zyda Marie Baaya
"Havaianas"

Started dancing ballet at the age of five, studying with Nila Claravall-Gonzales. After a handful of years without training, she resumed dancing at Iloilo National High School-Special Program for the arts. At 2005, Brezhnev Larlar recruited her to become a member of <Footworks Dance Theatre>.In January of 2007 she become a company scholar at the Ballet Philippines-Dance School. Currently she is dancing in the <Saint Benilde Romancon Dance Company>. Her teachers include Gerard Mercado, Noordin Jumalon, Geogette Sanchez, and Christine Crame-Santillan.

Kitamari
[The Yokohama Prize for a Brilliant Future]

After having begun dancing with the Butoh performer YURABE Masami, participated as a dancer in performances in 13 cities and six countries with <Sennichimae Blue Sky Dance Club> between 2001 and 2005. Founded the dance company <KIKIKIKIKIKI> in 2003, involved as director, choreographer, and dancer. Graduated in 2006 from the Kyoto University of Art and Design's department of visual and performing arts. In the Toyota Choreography Award 2008 competition, presented "Beehive007", performed by the dance company, and received 'the Audience Prize'.

MINAMI Yumiko
"MUSHI-KERA"

Studied art at Kyoto City University of Arts, later moving in direction of physical expression. Studied Butoh with IMA Tenko. After acquiring a variety of dance experience, began choreographing in 2004. Known for distinctive physical presence and world view, she was selected for Kyoto Dance Production 2007 (organized by Kyoto Art Center) and Dance Box Selection, among other events. Recently, in addition to work on stage, has been ambitiously experimenting with fully improvisational sessions with musicians.

[MITOH Ruri] Born in 1982; dancer and choreographer. As a member of <Leni-Basso>, has participated in all performances since 2004. After forming <japonica-ponica> in 2007, was selected as a finalist in Yokohama Dance Collection R. Has performed in work by MORISHITA Maki and UESHIMA Yukio and with TSUJIMOTO Tomohiko, Gunjo, KURODA Ikuyo, HIGASHINO Yoko, Jun, and others as well as presenting solo works. Performs at the Kichijoji Theater, Session House, and other venues. Has choreographed for students at the Japan Women's College of Physical Education.[KOGURE Kaho] Born in 1989; studied with YOSHIDA Kukiko from the age of six. Joined <japonica-ponica> in June, 2009. Presently a student at Japan Women's College of Physical Education.[SHINOGAYA Miho] Born in 1990. Joined <japonica-ponica> in June, 2009. Presently a student at Japan Women's College of Physical Education.

KASAI Mitsutake
[Special Prize]

"THE LAST MAN"

Has studied Butoh with KASAI Akira and dance with YAMAZAKI Kota. Choreographs work with its own world view, while incorporating the essence of various styles of dance. Work includes choreography for solo, duo, and group dances; also appears frequently in other choreographers' work. Studied in New York as a '2009 awardee in the Japanese Government Overseas Study Program for Artists', administered by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.

[The French Embassy Prize for Young Choreographers]

Has studied classical ballet since the age of four. A graduate of the dance education program at Ochanomizu University. While a student, performed on stage in <H. Art Chaos>. Subsequently formed <Project Oyama> with classmates and has appeared in many performances. Interested in individual means of expression, has also begun solo work. After receiving 'the Jury Prize' at Yokohama Dance Collection R 2009, performed the same work at the Wiz World Dance Festival in Incheon, KOREA, and in We're Gonna Go Dancing!! Vol. 10. Also participates as choreographer and dancer in performances by young composers and, listening to her body, engages in creative activities.

UTO Yukari

Born in 1986, while a student at Kunitachi College of Music, began focusing on the concept of converting sound into other media, creating performance works using sound, video image, and the body; presently in the master's degree program in intermedia art at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts.

Has studied with Butoh dancer Tetsuro Fukuhara since 2002, participating in <Tokyo Space Dance>. Took part in <Kim ITOH + the Glorious Future> in 2003 and <Time and Locus> in 2006. Affiliated with <The Glorious Future> since 2007. Took part in <Kim ITOH + the Glorious Future> tour of Britain and Dance Hakushu in 2008. Organized the improvisational unit <lente.> in 2009. Works include "dozing sea", "rosette", and "no satisfied full moon".

Specialized in theater at Tamagawa University, studying Butoh and other performance arts along with theater. As a dancer, has performed in work by YANAIHARA Mikuni, ITOH Kim, YAMADA Un, and MUROBUSHI Ko. Has been presenting original works since 2005. In 2008, was selected for the Saka-Agari Scholarship, a program supporting young artists chosen in a public competition. Works include "smoke, double", and "Tathata". Member of , a group of artists of the same age group.
