“To discover and foster promising young choreographers” and “To promote the spread of contemporary dance”: these have been the goals of Yokohama Dance Collection since its launch in 1996. This competition, which is organized on a dance festival framework, highly values originality in choreography by artists who bring fresh, uniquely personal perspectives to creative expression using the body in ways in tune with their times. Now, starting in 2016, this competition’s twenty-first year, we have added new components to our framework: collaborative programs with other Asian dance festivals and opportunities for globally active artists to perform, to present, as a shared dance platform for the growing dance world in Asia, a dazzlingly varied program.
PRESENT / PAST / FUTURE
We do not exist only in a specific time, the present; we also exist simultaneously in all times. Time moves, not in a single, linear direction but in endless cycles, with neither beginning nor end. Yokohama Dance Collection 2016 celebrates presences about to be forgotten, transformations in space and time, futures filled with chaos: works created on concepts in which present, past, and future, all present within the body, are juxtaposed. The site is Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse No. 1, which since its construction in 1913 has played an enormous role, as a major point in global distribution networks, in the advancement of Japan and other countries. It is a great pleasure for us to enjoy new possibilities in free expression in this historic structure, which continues to place a vital role in spreading new advances in creativity around the globe.
