ABOUT
Yokohama Dance Collection 2025
“Where Are We? The Current State of Dance”
Contemporary dance holds new discoveries. It is a time and space where previously unseen things become visible. In the 2020s, Asian contemporary dance is now entering a phase distinct from its past. In Asia, where each region possesses rich traditions, aesthetic sensibilities, and diverse physical cultures, these foundations have been built upon. Physical expression transcending language, ethnicity, borders, gender, generations, and established concepts connects people. Numerous collaborations based on individuality and creativity are emerging, where artists from multiple fields unite and work together in a dimension liberated from fixed notions and constraints, blurring boundaries. A creative space unfolds before us, where individuals connect on a free horizon, exploring the relationship between the world and the body, and the very essence of physicality itself.
Following extensive research into Japanese aesthetics and values, the world premiere of Through ‘Engawa, The Self in Season’—a world premiere by a Germany-based architect and a Japan/Europe-based choreographer; ‘Bridging Bridge’—born from the creative trust between dance collectives pioneering innovative work in Japan and Hong Kong; and ‘WAVES’—which explores new movement vocabularies using diverse technologies to visualize the invisible—we invite you to experience the currents of Asian creativity. A total of 26 works will be presented, including the open call competition that has launched the creative careers of over 500 choreographers to date, ambitious new works by recent competition winners, and collaborative programs with international dance festivals. We look forward to welcoming you to the 31st Yokohama Dance Collection 2025, the annual contemporary dance festival held in Yokohama.
