Premiered in 2022, YU-KEI is a dance work that radiates a rare energy, born from the collaboration between choreographer Yokoyama Ayano, whose work combines urban and folk sensibilities, and the rock band SuiseiNoboAz, who composed an entirely original score for the piece. Yokoyama reexamines the mentality and physicality behind Japanese customs and folk performing arts related to honoring the dead and praying for abundant harvests. She blends these traditional Japanese bodily expressions with contemporary dance techniques, such as street and modern dance. Performed live to the soul-stirring music of SuiseiNoboAz, the piece takes the ancient, simple practices of singing and dancing with invisible forces and wishes, and connects it to the modern theater. When dance and music, the fundamental acts of expression, are shared with the enduring souls of people passed down through generations, they evoke a nostalgic vision of the future.

Yokoyama Ayano<lal banshees>
Yokoyama Ayano is a dancer and choreographer who began studying modern dance in her childhood and later pursued dance theory at Japan Women’s College of Physical Education. Since 2009, she has been active as a dancer with Tokyo ELECTROCK STAIRS. In 2016, she founded her own company, <lal banshees>, and started launching original dance projects. In 2020, her solo work Suiyoubaion, part of her two-part solo trio series, won both the Jury Prize and the Porosus Endowment Fund – Camping 2020 Prize at YDC Competition I. The following year, she was invited by Aerowaves and performed both domestically and internationally. As can be seen in her 2019 piece Snow on the seafloor, which won the Kyoto Choreography Award Encouragement Prize, and YU-KEI (2022), she explores movement based on the individual sensitivities of her collaborating dancers, blending a refined, urban sensibility with the primal physicality of nature and rich musicality, while creating choreography where music and body resonate, generating a unique groove. Yokoyama also creates installation-type performances such as STRANGER THAN PHENOMENON (2022), and continues to expand her activities in her hometown of Nagano.
