Launched in 1996, Yokohama Dance Collection is a dance festival dedicated to discovering, presenting, and nurturing young choreographers and popularizing contemporary dance. In 2005, its tenth year, it was relaunched as Yokohama Dance Collection R, with the aim of building a dance market where choreographers from Asia could display their talents to the world. Since 2011, it has, as Yokohama Dance Collection EX, continued with an emphasis on joint projects and exchanges with festivals and theaters outside Japan and the discovery and promotion of young choreographers. In 2015, the festival will celebrate its twentieth anniversary as the only dance competition in Japan open to choreographers from other countries. Its richly varied program includes performances focused on winners of previous competitions and active throughout the world who have been invited to re-perform and re-construct their award-winning works, and performances of new works by three female choreographers who won awards in previous years. The showcase performances, which include presentations by the choreographers, are a readily accessible way to enjoy dance. The well-rounded program also includes talks and a photography exhibition.
These events will be linked with TPAM in Yokohama, an international meeting of performing arts professionals to promote the performing arts and grow international networks. Yokohama Dance Collection has become an indispensable nexus where choreographers, dancers, artists, and others involved in the world of dance gather to share this remarkable opportunity to expand their networks and develop new projects.
