ABOUT

Yokohama Dance Collection 2022

New horizons for contemporary dance——Now on its twenty-eighth year, the Yokohama Dance Collection has been held annually in Yokohama since 1996 as the Japanese platform for competitive world-class choreography performances. It is a festival for new expressions to be sought, new talents to be discovered, and multifaceted perspectives of diverse artists to be shared with creators, audiences, and all visitors alike. We hope that the festival will satisfy your curiosity through liberating forms of expression, provide you with a special and unforgettable experience, and a little more vigor to life.

Beyond the body’s limits——The body is the closest thing we have to nature. At the same time, it is a social and political thing in an intimate relationship with its surroundings and environment. Contemporary dance is a practice that reexamines the relationship between the body and society, as well as human beings themselves. It is an art form that allows us to understand the current times in which we stand. This year's Yokohama Dance Collection focuses on artists who are developing creative works in a realm where dance and technology meet. Artists exploring new art forms using digital technology will take the audience on a journey of unknown sensations. The word "art" comes from the Latin “ars,” which in turn comes from the Greek “techne,” or technology. The words "art" and "technology" are originally the same. This year’s performance <fuse*> shows us that advanced technology is the key for artists to acquire a new language and new form of expression, and that art and technology have always been closely related throughout the centuries. We would like to take this opportunity to share with all of you art formats that have been transformed by advanced technology along with new values and proposals that will affect not only the field of art, but our lives as well.
