Hiroaki Umeda has acted as the first resident choreographer at the Red Brick Warehouse as of April 2022. His latest and much-anticipated work is a dance performance with a totally new concept.
Umeda, whose medium has evolved from photography to dance, has not stayed within a specific genre of dance. Rather he has taken the human body and opened it up to the realm of media art and has been active in the international art scene since his work was first presented at YDC in 2002.
In contrast to the traditional performance method in which performers and audience share a single space and time, Umeda has been interested in showing dance in a way that can only be done online, from even before the pandemic, and has continued to explore it in diverse ways. For this performance, Umeda began working with dancers in 2021, and has proceeded to organically collaborate with artists exploring the cutting edge of digital expression in various fields, including AOKI takamasa for music and Matsuyama Shuhei and THINK AND SENSE for visuals. This thrilling dance performance comes to life via bodies both real and virtual, offering audiences an unprecedented multifaceted viewing experience, which will also be developed into VR and video productions.
